Learn to Sail on the East Boston WaterfrontAug 29, 2019 Blog Neoscape
Own a condo in East Boston at The Mark, and it’s only a matter of time before you’ll start thinking about learning to sail. No longer a luxury for the few, sailing is now a sport that welcomes all kinds of Bostonians. Piers Park Sailing Center is a nonprofit community center, located in the beautiful Piers Park, that provides a wealth of programs for anyone who wants to venture out on the water around Boston. Let’s take a look at what they have to offer, just a 10-minute walk from your front door.
Piers Park Sailing Center is an oasis of waterfront greenery, boasting a 60-foot tree-lined promenade, outdoor gym, and even an amphitheater for alfresco performances. The Center’s basic course teaches you the ropes (quite literally) in just 21 hours’ worth of lessons. In that time, you’ll grasp nautical terminology, boat preparation and handling, safety precautions, rigging, sail trim, basic navigation, and plenty more. Once you’ve completed the lessons, you’ll be eligible to sail a 23-foot Sonar-class sailboat, and you’ll be able to invite guests onboard and take part in weekly races. Not bad for less than 24 hours of study. Corporate and group sailing sessions, led by a qualified skipper, are also available—perfect for team building or introducing the family to your new hobby.
Sailing is an enviable talent to have under your belt, and if your kids are growing up in East Boston, it’s one you’ll want them to possess. Piers Park Sailing Center welcomes over 2,000 young learners each year, introducing many of them to a life of being in love with the water. Younger kids can observe jellyfish, take snaps with underwater cameras, and try kayaking lessons. Older kids can attend the “floating classroom,” where they get to wrestle with the actual science of sailing: that’s everything from measuring wind and water quality testing to understanding buoyancy and the nuances of marine biology. The Sailing After School program is another way for them to learn (and for you to keep the kids out of the condo for a few hours a week).
If you’re looking for a particularly relaxing weekend (or haven’t quite learned your port from your starboard yet), you can charter your own skipper-led boat from Piers Park Sailing Center. Cruising around Boston Harbor for two hours, with up to five of your friends, helps you to see Boston from a fresh perspective—and fall in love with your city all over again. Perhaps you’ll even espy your home from out on the water.
