Warm Up with CiderNov 26, 2019 Blog Neoscape
While both alcoholic and non-alcoholic apple ciders have been around and popular for centuries, a recent craft cider boom has reinvigorated the practice for the next generation. Artisans have taken the cider base and experimented with creating ciders in myriad flavors, and even the most apple-averse among us can now find something they love. With that said, it’s worth noting that not all cideries are created equal. Fortunately for residents of the East Boston waterfront condos at The Mark, they will be near one of the best cideries in the region: Downeast Cider House.
Downeast has been creating unfiltered, fresh, and flavorful hard cider since 2012, and their profile has grown exponentially in that time. They have a large rustic space in a shipyard warehouse on Marginal Street that is the perfect home for a cidery. It’s all about the process and the product—intentionally without frills—and the owners and employees don’t take themselves too seriously, which is refreshing in the world of craft beverages.
The best way to experience Downeast is to book a tour. It’s only $9, and it lasts an hour and takes participants through the entire production process. It’s as much a lesson as it is a tour. And the best part is the samples—which brings us to the most intriguing part of this piece: the ciders themselves. It’s a wonderful way to spend a day and experience a modern process with a tradition that dates back a few millennia. Also, if you stop by the cider house, you are able to taste up to 5 different ciders for free (must be 21 years-old or older).
Downeast currently has eight ciders on tap and numerous others canned and available for purchase—including four gluten-free options. There is, of course, the original blend, which is their flagship hard cider, and the double blend, which has a bit more bite. The mojito cider, a crowd favorite on the weekends, comes together with stellar results. Lastly, Downeast’s refreshing white cider pairs well with their house-made pumpkin blend, which is very appealing during the colder months.
